Rise of Kingdoms Beginner Guide: First City, Scouts, Research, and Alliance Steps
The early goal in Rise of Kingdoms is not to find a permanent “best” build order. It is to create a routine that keeps your city moving while you learn the map and the systems around it. The official game overview describes a large world map, scouting through fog, real-time battle, historical commanders, and alliance play. A beginner should use those systems in a calm order rather than trying to optimise everything at once.
Start by reading the current in-game requirements
The game shows the actual requirement and cost for each building, research item, and training action. Use that information as the source of truth for your account. Patch notes, kingdom age, and your current progress can change what is sensible next.
For each early session, choose one main progression action and one supporting action. For example, if a building is the immediate gate, check its requirements first, then use the rest of the session to gather or prepare the resources it actually needs. This is clearer than spending every resource the moment you receive it.
Explore the map deliberately
Scouts uncover fog on the world map; that is one of the game’s stated exploration systems. Early scouting gives you context for the space around your city and teaches you how the map presents objectives.
Send scouts when you can review what they reveal. Do not treat the map as a checklist to rush through. A useful beginner habit is to alternate between city work and map information: start a city task, inspect the map, then return to the next requirement with a better sense of what you want to do.
Build, research, and train as one loop
Buildings, research, and troop training draw on the same overall pool of attention and resources. The current game UI will tell you which requirement blocks an action, so use a simple loop:
- Identify the next city or progression requirement.
- Check the displayed resource and prerequisite needs.
- Start the longest useful task you can complete responsibly.
- Use the waiting time to scout, gather information, or prepare the next requirement.
- Recheck your plan when the task completes instead of following a rigid list.
This method works even when a patch changes a cost or prerequisite, because it is based on the client’s current information.
Choose research with a question in mind
Do not select research merely because another guide labels it mandatory. Ask what it solves for your current account: a city prerequisite, an activity you are learning, or a capability you will use soon. If none of those applies, hold the resources and review the next requirement.
The official game has an in-client Gameplay Guide, introduced to help players find information about combat and controls. Use it alongside the research screen when a term or option is unclear. It is more likely to reflect the current client than an old static ranking list.
Join an alliance that matches your activity
Alliances are a core part of the official game presentation, including cooperation on the world map. For a new player, the practical selection test is simple: look for an alliance with rules you understand, active communication you can follow, and expectations that match the time you can actually spend.
Read its rules before relocating or committing resources. An active group may help you learn the map, but it does not replace understanding your own city, account, and objectives.
Learn combat before making it your main project
Rise of Kingdoms uses real-time battles, and the official overview says a player can change plans and withdraw forces as the battlefield changes. Start by observing the information presented in the current client and avoid treating any commander, civilization, or troop ranking as permanent. Those choices are balance-sensitive and depend on account progress.
Early mistakes are usually planning mistakes: beginning several upgrades without checking costs, picking actions because they sound optimal for another account, or fighting before reading the current situation. The cure is a short review before each commitment.
Continue the cluster
When resource pressure becomes the immediate problem, use Rise of Kingdoms early resource priorities. If you are playing on desktop, how to play Rise of Kingdoms on PC covers the official installation and account checks. You can find the rest of the site’s editorial game coverage in Game Guides.
